Monte Cristo Sandwich


  • 3 slices firm white sandwich bread
  • 2 slices gruyere cheese
  • 1/8 lb sliced ham
  • 1/8 lb sliced turkey
  • 1 tsp mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 Tbsp milk
  • 2 Tbsp Black Butte Porter
  • ¼ tsp vanilla
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter, for cooking
  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Jam or fruit preserves for serving


  1. Top two slices of bread with one slice of cheese each and divide ham and turkey evenly
  2. Mix together mayo and mustard and spread on both sides of third slice of bread and place this slice on top of one of the other sides and flip the remaining piece on top (bread, cheese, meat, mayo bread, meat, cheese, bread)
  3. Place a flat plate on top of sandwich and press gently for a few seconds
  4. With a sharp knife, slice off crusts of bread
  5. Whisk together the egg, yolk, milk, porter, vanilla and salt
  6. Heat butter in a small skillet over medium heat
  7. Dredge sandwich through the egg mixture, coating all sides
  8. Carefully place in pan with melted butter and cook 3-4 minutes until browned on each side
  9. Holding sandwich carefully with tongs, brown all edges for a few seconds as well
  10. The sandwich should be a dark golden brown with melted cheese when done
  11. Serve dusted with powdered sugar and a side of fruit preserves
