Giving Back to the Community

Posted on: February 25th 2013

Giving back to the community we’ve called home for the past 25 years is part of our core culture here at Deschutes Brewery. What better time to talk about the importance of businesses being involved in charitable giving than today, International Corporate Philanthropy Day (ICPD)? This international advocacy day was originally founded by the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy, the only international forum of business CEOs and chairpersons focused exclusively on corporate philanthropy. We say every day is for giving back, but if a recognized day like today helps raise awareness, then we’re on board!

So, we’re taking today to tell a little bit more about our story, with specific examples of how recent gifts are being used right here in our community. Each year, we contribute $1 per barrel of beer sold to charitable endeavors. That means, when you buy our beer, you’re giving back too. Last year, we sold more than 250,000 barrels of beer (31 gal/bbl) – and that’s math that makes a big difference. In fact, since our inception, we’ve given more than $3 Million dollars back to organizations in Central Oregon and the other places we do business. What causes do we support? Everything from environmental causes to children’s services…and many things in between. A cross-departmental team of passionate individuals help to guide community giving for the brewery.

Just to give a recent example of how one of our gifts is being used, we just donated $10,000 to the Bend Area Habitat for Humanity earlier today. They will be using the gift to construct a home in our community for a low income family. Construction is slated to begin on the home this spring, and not only will the new home directly benefit the family of five that will be moving in there, but the construction has a positive economic impact on our region. We were happy to be able to support this project in a significant way this year, joining with gifts from other businesses and volunteers in our area.

We hope all businesses in our community understand just how important their support is to our local nonprofits, and all that these organizations do to support the health of Central Oregon and beyond. Happy International Corporate Philanthropy Day!
