The Abyss 2016 & Friends…

Posted on: December 13th 2016

The anticipation has been building all year, and this holiday season we are excited to release three versions of The Abyss for your tasting pleasure. The Abyss 2016 has hints of roasted malts, licorice, chocolate, and molasses. This always decadent beer tastes wonderful now, and will smooth out over time in your beer cellar.

In 2015, we debuted some “remarkably limited” variants of The Abyss aged 100% in Rye and Cognac Barrels. This year, we’ve got another treat for you. The Abyss Scotch and The Abyss Brandy. The Scotch barrels from a collection of distilleries in Scotland (duh), add a hint of toasted vanilla, and the barrels from fine Brandy Wine in France add a touch of sweetness to the Brandy version.

When asked to describe the flavors of these two rare releases, our Assistant Brewmaster Ryan Schmiege had these delectable and fancy things to say…(obviously, he doesn’t take himself too seriously):

The Abyss Scotch – “The most multifaceted liquid truffle ever fashioned. Dark cherries brined in light peat smoke and popped into the heart of a prune. Then drizzled with toffee and flamed caramel, crusted with white and green peppers, and dipped in honey infused molasses. This beautiful construction is then delicately coated with rich dark chocolate and finished with a luxurious coating of milk chocolate and a dusting of cocoa powder and gold flakes. Served on a chard shard of oak with three sultanas and pieces of vanilla suffused marzipan.” (12.2% ABV)

The Abyss Brandy – “Enticingly ripe, earthy fruit rudiments awash in the open salt air of Normandy, lightly augmented with mushrooms grown in the depths of the Tronҫais forest. Delicate notes of Livarot glazed with an orange reduction and textured with toasted coconut shavings. Distinct aromas of cinnamon and ulster cherry, foxtrot in time with tangs of vanilla and brown sugar. Balanced, approachable wood zests meld charmingly with the finish of figs and Allegheny plums.” (13.2% ABV)

…But don’t take his words for it, give them a try yourself!

Join us for The Abyss 2016 Release Celebration at our pubs in Bend and Portland on Friday, December 16th. They are each hosting their own unique events including vertical flights, menu specials, and BRUNCH in Portland.

We’ve had such positive responses from our brewers, sensory tasting panel, and fans about these rare 100% barrel-aged versions of The Abyss, that we are planning on continuing the trend moving forward. Any barrel suggestions?
