Red Chair IPA – The Newest Edition to the Bond Street Series
Attention all craft beer enthusiasts who live to discover bold brews and push the sensory envelope. A new member of the Deschutes Brewery Bond Street Series is set to debut in mid May and will be available in 22oz. bottles through September. Red Chair IPA is named after the oldest operating lift at Mt. Bachelor, a classic old school double that locals flock to on fresh powder mornings. This beer has been wildly popular with our pub regulars, who always seem to know when we have hit on something special. Red Chair will be the latest in a volley of experimental hop beers originating at our Bond Street pub in downtown Bend.
Given the wild reception and enthusiasm shown by the public for the likes of The Abyss, The Dissident, Hop Henge, and Hop Trip, we are confident that there is no shortage of folks out there who appreciate innovation. Clearly people understand and appreciate the importance, or dare we say, the absolute necessity of our continuing to be experimental and cutting edge.
Red Chair is a bright copper beauty (think freshly minted penny) with a solid head and perfect lacing that typifies Deschutes ales. It has a plush body with satiny caramel flavors derived from seven varieties of malt including British crystals, German pilsner, and domestic versions of cara-pils and Munich. Despite all of this, Red Chair is still a hop forward ale, but not in the way many have gotten used to. You will find no cloying, mouth puckering bitterness here. In its place a straight up succulent citrus punch to the nose. This is due to the experimental nature of some of the hops, as well as, how late in the process they were added.
To say that the seemingly contradictory elements of caramel maltiness and citrusy hops get along would be an understatement; they coexist in blissful harmony. Red Chair would pair exceptionally well with hot-n-sour soup, enchiladas with mole sauce, or thin crust margarita pizza. But don’t take our word for it, get a little experimental yourself and enjoy this wonderful beer with any food you see fit, or all by itself.
Cheers,
John “Abe” Abraham, Brewer

John,
You should be able to find Red Chair IPA at QFC, Fred Meyer, Ballard Market and any of the bottle shops. There is plenty of it so please ask your favorite grocery store to carry it for us. Thanks!

Red Chair IPA is without a doubt the best IPA I’ve laid lips on!
Thanks!

Red Chair Ipa makes me want to own it! Amateur brewer turned pro and back to home brewing, its bingo, bongo, great tasting, full session fun in a bottle!
One of few I’d love to clone for my neighborhood pub.
I’ll add this about that. A late hopped, high gravity ale that is crisp, hop fragrant with almost candy malt surfacing in every swallow.
Widmer makes a red ale of ‘07 and then Brrr..that reminds me of this newest Deshuttes outbreak ” Red Chair”. A brewer of 15 years, I congratulate you on still making my mouth water at the thought of another glass of this delicious brew.

Will your beers be available in Houston?

Jimbo,
You should be able to find Black Butte Porter and Mirror Pond Pale Ale at Spec’s Liquor, Whole Foods and on tap at the Flying Saucer. If your favorite watering hole doesn’t have it, please ask them to carry it. Thanks!

Deschutes is my beer of choice; any of your brews. But I’ve learned to embrace the seasonal brews and to BUY THEM WHEN I SEE THEM. I just came across Red Chair NWPA; went back to store within days to buy again…all gone. I’ll keep looking. LOVE this beer. My previous LOVE was the Black Butte Porter XX. That also disappeared from shelves too quickly. I live in the Gig Harbor area and shop at QFC.

I have to say that I LOVE the Red Chair NWPA. It is hands down my favorite beer. I think about it when it’s not in the refrigerator, and whenever I get to the grocery store in a “good beer” mood, it’s always the beer I choose…because it’s definitely worth the extra couple of bucks. And I’ve definitely been in a “good beer” mood more often since trying it for the first time a few weeks ago. I don’t know much about beer, I have to be honest. But I’ve tried many kinds before – and it’s finally finding a beer that I rave about that has made me want to learn more. Red Chair NWPA is so freakin’ good I just want to discover the mystery! I want to know everything about it so I can try to recreate it when it goes off the shelves! Moreso, I want to start learning about the science of beer. I never really cared when I was drinking other stuff, but I am inspired to know just how this beer is made – it’s like asking an incredible chef the recipe, I know…but I just wanted to say thank you! Your beer is not only delicious, but has got me curious about pursuing a knowledge of brewing…
I look forward to visiting your brewery and trying the things on tap, as well as to the next experimental beer to hit the shelves!

What is the major distinction between your Red Chair IPA and your Red Chair NWPA – only local hops in the NWPA, perhaps? Keep up the great work!

Red Chair is an excellent pale ale. I much prefer it to Mirror Pond and I hope you continue to offer it.
Cheers!

I have been a fan of the Deschutes Brewery since their beginning in ‘88! The Red Chair Ale is absolutely my favorite beer ever-ever-ever! Besides the incredible taste, it brings back memories of meeting the gang every weekend at the “Red Chair” on Mt. B. Truly one of the highlights-of-time in my life. The bonus is someone thought as much as I did of Red Chair and named a great beer after it. How cool is that? Thanks so much.

This is the most excited I’ve been about a beer in a long time. I just saw this as a seasonal ale at my local grocer, and had to pounce since you guys kick ass at everything else you make. But this (with the possible exception of the special stuff you send to Uber) is far and away my favorite from you guys, and right up there with my favorite beer of all time.
I’ve never been spurred to write to a brewer to say thanks. This one finally got me motivated. Thanks!!
Also, if you can find it in your heart to post some sort of recipe, or at least a hop and malt list, homebrewers around the PNW would love you forever, this one included.
Thanks again,
K

Please, please, make this a year round beer!
Mirror Pond has been my one and only for two years. It has now been replaced by Red Chair, which is the best beer I have had anywhere on planet earth.

Black Butte Porter has been my favorite beer for years. That is until Red Chair IPA crossed my lips. My only complaint is that is a seasonal brew. Several of my friends feel the same way. I think all of your brews are awesome, but Red Chair is the best, by far.
April 26th, 2010 at 3:43 pm
They are the same beer, just different packaging. We felt that Red Chair was not quite bitter enough for an IPA but more interesting than a traditional pale so we renamed the style to NW Pale Ale.
April 27th, 2010 at 11:09 pm
Really the same beer? Just got a 22 of the IPA version in a discontinued sale and tasted like a different recipe. Maybe is was the aging?
Seriously though, all my friends want the NWPA year round, why not make the Inversion a seasonal? And let’s give Cindercone a longer season, if not year round. Those two blow the rest of the year round offerings away with ease.

Just got another 6-pack this week and am savoring every last drop! So good with my spaghetti last night! I’m drooling like Homer just thinking about it…

I love, love, LOVE the Red Chair. You can’t be serious about not producing it after April. It has replaced the “snow-covered mountains” pale ale as my favorite beer. I’ve never commented online about a beer before, but this is important. Keep making it all summer! I trust if you persist with you decision to stop making it, it’ll be replaced with something even more to my liking.

Hi Steve,
Red Chair NWPA will be available in 6 and 12 packs from January through April as our late winter/early spring seasonal. The best place to find our seasonal beers in the LA area is BevMo.

Hey Deschutes!
Is there places that sells seasonal beer all year? Let me know if you can assist in my quest for Red Chair during August!
I was wondering if you know if there is any place to buy Red Chair during the off season that it is sold in stores or online? My uncle is coming home from Iraq in a month and we wanted to have his favorite beer for him when he arrives
Cheers!
Ashley

Hi Ashley,
Thanks for trying track down our Red Chair NWPA for your uncle. Red Chair is our late winter/spring seasonal so it is only available from January through April. Even if you were able to find some at the store now it would be way past its prime and I would not suggest drinking it. Twilight Ale is our summer seasonal ale and although it is very different from Red Chair, it is really delicious, too.
I am happy to hear that your uncle is coming home from Iraq and will raise a pint to him for his service to our country.
Cheers,

Hi Steve, Red Chair is one of our seasonal beers and is only available from January through April. We do not distribute our beer in TN yet, so come January you will have to check out http://www.bottletrek.com to see about having some sent to your house from Oregon. Cheers, Jason
