Savor Warm Summer Nights with Twilight And now’s the time to begin collecting our Anniversary Golden Ale before it’s gone!
Twilight Ale. Inspired by that magic time between sunset and nightfall, Deschutes Brewery’s Twilight Ale helps squeeze those last precious moments from the end of a long summer day. Four different hop varieties, including bold Amarillos used for a final dry hopping, provide the distinctive, slightly citrusy flavor notes that say sunny weather to beer drinkers everywhere.
Hoppy but harmonious, the balanced malt body of this thirst quenching ale earned it gold medals at the 2005 North American Beer Awards and the Great American Beer Festival in 2003. Serve it well-chilled and outdoors to get the most out of the too-short summer.
19th Anniversary Golden Ale. “We felt we had to do something special to mark our 19th Anniversary," said brewmaster Larry Sidor, "so we took a vow of silence and brewed our first Belgian style ale ever to be bottled."
The straw colored Strong Golden Ale is made from an impressive international list of ingredients that acknowledges the diverse roots of craft beer. "We used Czech Saaz, Slovenian Golding, Pacific Northwest Liberty, and Brewers Gold hops," said Sidor, "along with French pilsner malt, and Belgian white candy diamonds and bitter orange peel from the island of Curacao for a little extra kick and sizzle."
The vow of silence, a nod to the Belgian monks who brew some of the world's most revered beers, may have been the biggest challenge for the brewers at Deschutes. About half way through adding the 180 bags of malt, one of the brewers inadvertently exclaimed, "Good Lord, this is a lot of malt." Keeping with the spirit of their Belgian counterparts, another brewer answered, "Amen, brother."
As with all Bond Street Series beers, a limited amount of the 19th Anniversary Golden Ale was brewed - so pick up a bottle or two before it disappears forever.

Deschutes Near & Far From Crater Lake to Jamaica, mon!
Sometimes…I wish someone would pack me into a suitcase and take me to all of the glorious locales that our delicious beers visit! From Southeast Asia to the rim of Crater Lake, Deschutes Brewery fans showed and recorded their love for their favorite beers. As Dr. Suess said, “Oh, the places you’ll go!”
“…Holy Schnikey, The Bottle’s Empty?!…” Even an empty bottle of Mirror Pond Pale Ale held allure for Reg Siemens of Winnipeg, Manitoba. He ventured south of his border for a 6500 mile motorcycle vacation…and found that someone enjoyed pristine Crater Lake with the always authentic Mirror Pond Pale Ale.
“Can I get some jambalaya with this?!’ Greg Conrad took in the delicacies of “The Big Easy” and brought his own Black Butte Porter. Po’ boys and Porter…a natural combination!
“Crack that puppy open!” Pam and Don Larsen, while globetrotting last spring, found time to photograph their Jubelale within the floating market of Bangkok, Thailand.
“Leaping Tall Buildings…” Beer pilgrims Norm and Christen Holt carried Mirror Pond Pale Ale to the fabled city of Plzen (pronounced “pilsen”, home of the first pilsner and Pilsner-Urquell Brewery), Czech Republic. I wonder how big that bottle of Mirror Pond is?!
“I Am So Thirsty Right Now…” Nancy and Randy MacLennan trekked by boat and foot around the Caribbean, flying the Deschutes Brewery colors. I am sure Randy is wishing his T-shirt was a full bottle of Mirror Pond Pale Ale after zip-lining through the forests of Jamaica.

Our employees are not only good looking, but they can run!
“So What Do I Do Now…” Palm trees, sunsets, Deschutes Brewery beer…it doesn’t get any better. Life is rough for Chris Hudson, our sales rep who travels to Hawaii, to make sure we can all enjoy a Black Butte Porter on the Big Island. Thanks Chris….we know it was hard!

Brewmaster Larry Sidor Drafts Veteran Brewhouse for Portland Pub Roster!!
The Portland Pub brewhouse search ended with its recent arrival here in Bend. Following a lead from a trusted scout, Brewmaster Larry Sidor traveled to Raleigh, North Carolina to inspect the prospect personally. Negotiations with the previous owner revealed that the brewhouse had been warming the bench for the last two years. Many pieces of equipment had scattered to various storage facilities (think Chewbacca collecting C3PO’s parts!). After several intense days of inspection and inventory, an assembled team of men, trucks, and one crane prepared the new recruit for its cross-country journey.
Terrific excitement accompanied the arrival of the brewhouse to the production facility here in Bend. Employees paused in their daily duties and gathered to catch a glimpse of the imposing anchor of the new Portland Pub. Brewmaster Larry Sidor wearing a broad smile, said, “It is exactly what we wanted.” Beautiful, functional, and flexible, he added (in other words…good looking and muscular yet nimble). “It’s larger than I thought it would be,” commented Erik Frank. The atmosphere was definitely festive.
Draped in hand-hammered 3/16” copper with a stainless steel interior, the European design reflects the skill and experience of German brewhouse engineering. The first vessel serves as combination Mash Tun and Brew Kettle. The second vessel possesses a Lauter Tun on top and a Pre-Run Tank/Whirlpool combination below. The compact design saves space and energy. A complete cellar and serving vessels accompanied the brewhouse as well (it was sort of like drafting an entire team!). Larry predicts an annual production volume of roughly 4200 beer barrels. This is the best news, because this reporter suspects a mighty thirst may need to be slaked when Deschutes Brewery’s Portland Pub opens its doors sometime next spring!
Vital Stats Born: 1994 Location: Bamburg, Germany Parent: Kaspar Shulz Brewhouse Capacity: 21 Beer Barrels (651 gallons) per batch Portland Brewpub Capacity: About 4200 Beer Barrels/Year Brewtime: 7-8 Hours “Polish Time” (for the copper): 3-4 Hours |

Mike's Angle Franklin's Greatest Influence was Beer. . .
“God invented beer because he loves us and wants us to be happy” ~Benjamin Franklin
As we approach the 231st anniversary of the signing of the declaration of independence, it is fitting to give tribute to one of America’s most influential individuals: Benjamin Franklin. Ben was all about beer. He was an excellent home brewer whose goal was to teach the craft to the early Americans in hope of severing ties with England (the colonies were dependant on England for beer – and pretzels). Franklin went to England at the age of nineteen in order to do what he called “research” but which turned out to be a four year long pub crawl. Upon his return he did a bunch of political stuff, but he is best known for all of his wonderful inventions, most of which were based on the production and enjoyment of beer. Ben invented bifocals which he referred to as “beer goggles”. He invented the rocking chair in order to avoid tipping over in his chair, which he did frequently in the pubs of Pennsylvania. “There goes Ben again,” was a common phrase in the early American public houses. It is said that he discovered electricity, but I’m sure people who had been previously struck by lightning would argue that – not to mention anyone who’d ever rubbed a balloon on their head. His pursuit of electricity was based on a strong desire for a little light that would come on when he opened his beer fridge. As this was not in the cards, he invented daylight savings time so it would at least be light a little later.
Ben was obsessed with making the turkey the national bird; primarily because it goes better with beer than bald eagle does. An interesting note from a valid historical source: “the turkey of his day was nothing like the domesticated descendants we know today. The wild turkey of Ben Franklin's day was a brightly plumed, cunning bird of flight.” Imagine an enormous flock of brightly plumed, cunning turkeys literally blotting out the sun. Magnificent.
Because his peers had such high respect for him – and he had the only house with a kegorator – Benjamin Franklin was asked to “draft” the Declaration of Independence.
I hope this brief insight into the life of one of our forefathers gives you a greater respect not only for Mr. Franklin, but for America itself - and turkeys, too.
EDITORS NOTE: As usual, virtually no research was done on the above article - except the part about the turkeys. |
