Bend Celebrates 100 Years! Lewis and Clark Oregon Bicentennial!
Once a peaceful meadow near an easy ford across the Deschutes River (from the French “Riviere des Chutes” - where it is unclear whether “Chutes” translates to “falls” or “slides” or “flying monkeys”); it was referred to as “Farewell Bend” by travelers heading west to the Willamette Valley. The name was eventually changed by the U.S. Postmaster to just “Bend” because he apparently had an unnatural phobia of the word “Farewell”. Lewis and Clark did not actually discover Bend, though they wished they had. An obscure journal entry from William Clark when camped at the mouth of the Deschutes on the Columbia River reads: “Once againe Meriwether has short-sheeted my sleeping bagge. The soape ran out weeks ago and the members of the Corps are beginning to smelle like Buffaloe in rut. I could certainly use a beere.” Had they merely turned left (or right, depending on which way they were facing) and followed the Deschutes, found Bend, and waited 192 years, they could have enjoyed a fine ale from Deschutes Brewery. You, on the other hand, don’t have to wait that long. Come on in for a Bend Centennial Lager or stop by the local store and pick up a six-pack of Twilight Ale.
Deschutes ~ Near and Far My request for spring vacation photos has been heard! Three fine Deschutes fans sent along their exotic shots, eliciting a deep need for me to head out on an exotic vacation!
Costa Rica, Cabo San Lucas and Hawaii are the Deschutes destinations for this Bitter Truth issue.
First, Jim Lord and Jessica Wojdak toted Cinder Cone Red to Tamarindo Beach in Costa Rica ~ Now, that is some beautiful beach!
Chuck Mackdanz thought Black Butte Porter and Cabo San Lucas were a perfect fit ~ And I agree!
Now, Chad Berg has moved to Hawaii and he loves his Obsidian Stout, swinging in a hammock, chilling by the ocean. As Chad says, “Obsidian Stout is good on a warm, Hawaiian day.” You don’t have to convince me!

Next time you take a vacation, preferably exotic and far, far away, pack a bottle of Deschutes beer and send us a photo (Eiffel Tower, Taj Mahal, World's Largest Ball of String, etc.). We’ll send you cool Pub Stuff if we publish it.
Thanks to each of our contributors ~ And I encourage everyone to send photos when available. I hear rumors that next issue will bring pictures of China! Who would have thought!?!
Deschutes Brewery’s Employee Community This is a new section for the Bitter Truth and highlights the many varied activities that brewery staff is involved.
The Deschooters, the brewery’s men’s indoor soccer team, once again took home this season’s trophy. They also went undefeated for the season! Congratulations to Matt Bussman, John Mercer, Andy Tester, Greg Strom, Jon Porlier, Manual Ramirez and Colby Nightingale.
The Brewery’s Employee volunteer group has also been extremely busy since it’s inception in November 2004. They have coordinated activities within the brewery that include a successful coat drive for Bend Aid, a division of COCAAN. The Adopt-a-Family program, also through COCAAN, gathered Christmas gifts and dinner for a family in transition. The brewery group adopted a family of four and is hoping to adopt two families for 2005. The Bethlehem Inn and the Central Oregon Humane Society are organizations that the brewery volunteer group has recently assisted with meals and muscle power. In the upcoming months, clean-up for the Metolius Preserve, implementing a veggie garden for Healy Heights and the McKenzie Hwy clean-up are on the books.
Worldly considerations have not escaped the employees at Deschutes Brewery. Over $10,000 was donated to the American Red Cross for tsunami victims when the brewery offered to match 2 to 1 the amount donated by employees.
Upcoming Beers at The Pub:

Deschutes Brewery Employee Profile
If you have spent any time at the pub in the last twelve years, you’ve seen or met JC, aka John Collins. Though his hair is shorter these days, JC is still a free spirit at heart. He takes full advantage of everything that Central Oregon has to offer ~ He snowboards, skateboards and rock climbs and surfs when he gets over to the coast. JC also is a family man. He says his favorite part about working at the pub is interacting with all the people and, of course, the beer. His favorites are Mirror Pond Pale Ale and Black Butte Porter. Stop in for a pint and say “hi” to JC ~ He will be behind the bar! Cheers ~
